Jaya Gauri: There were devotees from all over Europe to be initiated for first and second and my name was added to the list. I think I was the last name on the list. When it was time for the actual giving of the japa beads and giving the vows to Srila Prabhupada, everyone was called up. When I got in front of Srila Prabhupada, since I came from Brazil speaking Portuguese, I did not know how to say the four principles in English. At that time my English was like ABC. But I was so sure of myself in taking initiation from Srila Prabhupada that I just looked at him and said the vows in Portuguese. When I finished saying the vows he looked to his disciples on one side and he looked to the other side. Nobody knew what was happening so that gave him the reason to pay specific attention to me and to look deeply into my eyes. He looked at me as if he could see this life, my past life and all the dirt in my heart and the good things if I had any. Not knowing Portuguese gave Srila Prabhupada a moment to personally analyze me to determine if I was qualified to be his disciple. He said, “Your name is Jaya Gauri devi dasi.” It was definitely transcendental.
